Barnacle Shelters

Still, Malka hopes his project inspires other architects to work on more community-minded projects that take advantage of public space. "I really think that for architects now there are new ways, technical ways and methods, that would take us out of not only being the arm of the government," he says. "We can be more open to societal problems."

  • Twenty-three homeless shelter pods barnacled to the side of a railroad station in Marseilles, France
  • Architect and former graffiti artist Stéphane Malka seeks out these neglected armpits of cities' public space and transforms them into light, flexible, emergency housing
  • He calls the process "architectural kama sutra" because of the unorthodox positioning of the structures next to, above, or below traditional buildings and city elements
  • Putting up the structure in September was also part of Malka's strategy. "In France, there's a rule saying in wintertime, you can't take someone out of housing," Malka explains
  • Meant to protect low- and middle income workers from being pushed out of housing and into the suburbs by obscene rent increases, recently passed laws now guarantee that most renters won't end up on the streets during the coldest months

Twitter can be used in education in many ways. It can help people get in touch with teachers and other classmates. It can help students research for papers or find articles about the topics that they are learning about. It can be used to remind students of homework and upcoming assignments. Unfortunately there could be some problems with using twitter in school. Students could use the website for the wrong reasons, and use bad language or post inappropriate content on the website. Also students can recieve incorrect information if they look in the wrong places. Twitter can be used in many useful ways, if it is used correctly.

Do Now 11/18

Many things ignite my desire to help change the world. I believe in everyone be treated equally and it bothers me when people are not treated the same because they are different. To help my community I could hold a town wide meeting to get everyone's attention and get them to know about what is happening in the world.
Another thing that I could do to help my community is to hold a food and clothing drive to help the less fortunate. Everyone deserves warm clothes and a meal on the holidays.

Do now 10/28

There are countless things that I could do if I was chosen to wear an invisiblity cloak for a day. Many people would choose to help themselves, but helping someone would be even better. Not being recognized for doing something nice is worth knowing that you helped someone, or in my case, saved someone's life.
The day that I was given the invisibility cloak, I was compelled to do something that would help people that lived in my neighborhood. I spent all day looking for someone or something that needed help and I was starting to give up on my dreams of helping someone. Finally, I heard someone yelling out for help, I started running towards the yell, it was my chance to help someone. A woman was stuck in the train tracks with her baby, and a train was coming towards her quickly. I knew that it was my time to help someone. I ran towards them as fast as I could and the woman was free from the track. I then realized that I wouldn't be recognized for my good deed, but I decided to keep the cloak on and keep my identity a secret.

Do Now 10/7

I would like to have a class that teaches me about oceanography. Oceanography is a branch of Earth Science that focuses on the ocean. It covers a wide range of topics, including marine organismsand ecosystem dynamics; ocean currentswaves, and geophysical fluid dynamics; plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor; and fluxes of various chemical substances and physical properties within the ocean and across its boundaries. This is a very interesting topic to learn about and i believe many students would be interested in taking the class.
The class would meet at the beach every wednesday and learn about a new topic everytime the class meets. This would be a hands-on experience and will  further the students understanding of the ocean and everything that lives within the water. A field trip for the class could be to go snorkling and study the ecosystems of the fish. The final project would be a presentation that the student must give telling everyone what they learned and what they are going to do with their new knowledge of the ocean.

Medical Terminology

My favorite class this year is Medical Terminology. My teacher's name is Mr. Maniscalco, better known as Mr. Man. He has been teaching at Wood-Ridge High School for three years. He was the director of Medical Physics and Dosimetry for 30 years. Mr. Man taught physics St. Peter's College, Rutgers University, American College of Radiology, and American College of Medical Physics. He teaches Chemistry, Robotics, and Medical Terminology.

In Medical Terminology, we learn about the language of medicine. A majority of medical terms are based in Latin or Greek. There are parts of words that can be broken down, so they are easily understood. Words are made up by prefixes, roots, suffixes, and linking or combining vowels. Once you understand the parts of the words, they are much easier to understand. For example pericarditis seems like a word that is impossible to understand, but in reality it only means inflammation of the outer layer of the heart.

I'm very excited to be taking Medical Terminology, I love learning about the human body. I want to pursue a job in the medical field and this class will help me immensely.
